Over
the years many of our guests have asked me,
"How would I best describe Ski
Shores?"
On the banks of beautiful Lake
Austin, sits a cafe that
for more than 50years has quietly served the community. Parents, grandparents, and
children of all ages have been finding their way to this classic wharf
side
diner that for many reminds them of a different era.
Some say it's
the water, many say it's the fine selection of Austin entertainers, and
still
others suggest it is the food that makes Ski Shores Waterfront Cafe an
original
Austin destination.
Part of the appeal at Ski Shores is the staff, who
in their youthful exuberance,
compose an ambiance that makes the most crotchety of souls feel first
rate.
With their upbeat, laughing attitudes and laid back attire the
staff
promotes a healthy rejuvenation of spirit.
Ski Shores came to be in the mid 50's as a
convenient place to feed visitors
staying at the Greenshores vacation bungalows. The matriach of
the
Fowler family, Mrs. Marion Fowler, envisioned that it would be
wonderful
if the visitors had a place to eat without driving back to town.
Austin
native Billy Hill recalls the sandy beaches (where the docks in front
are
now) providing a launching pad for many a young Austinite in their
pursuit
of learning how to ski.
Indeed, a debt of gratitude is owed the Fowler
family for making available
the location where Ski Shores continues to operate and treat its
customers
with a stress free environment. The small yet largely popular Ski
Shores
has cemented its place in Austin lore by not straying too far from its
original
intent.
During the mid eighties a plan was created to take
the flipper era cafe to
new heights by opening year round, offering a wider variety of food,
and
a more consistent format of Austin entertainters. Unfortunately,
this
was during a downturn in the economy, the number of Ski Shores guests
were
nominal and the attempt was strained. The vision was sound but
the
timing was not right, at least not yet.
The subsequent decade saw Ski Shores battling
dueling desires to became a
viable business yet remain the small summer concession stand that it
was.
Then finally, in the mid nineties the Levy family,
under the direction and
guidance of Doris Levy, took stewardship of Ski Shores and developed
the
family concept and environment into its present day reality.
Today Ski Shores stands as one of the few remaining original Austin
establishments
that provides a picture of Austin's past while operating in the
present.
It's hard to do Ski Shores justice with words...its something one must
experience.
Best Wishes,
George M. Levy
