BORDER BURGER

Anyone that slops guacamole on a burger is cool with me!

Ski Shores is difficult to find and a long journey to reach, but that's what really makes the place.  Even on the most beautiful spring/summer days its guaranteed to not be overcrowded, but still populated by enough gorgeous women and good food to make the long drive worth it.

Sit underneath the oak that's several decades old on the banks of Travis Lake, listen to good music, bullshit with friends, drink decently priced beer, and wolf down Austinistic food.
Ski shores is a low stressed alternative to Hula Hut that's definitely worth the drive and deserves everyones patronage.

Ski Shores is one of my favorite places to go hang out and be outside on a hot summer day. As mentioned before it can seem like a bit of a drive due to all the windy roads to get there, but it is worth it. The laid-back attitude oozing off this place just begs you to kick your feet up and bask in Austin's glorious weather.

The food is pretty darn good too. Especially their burgers. God the burgers are worth the drive themselves. Also. They have a burger named after me. That's right, the SCOOTER burger is sure to please. A double meat monstrosity that is topped with Jalapenos and Cheese. Again, a real crowd pleaser. Fine. It wasn't "named" after me, but I figured since I like it so much, it might as well have been.

Give Ski Shores a try, it will be worth the drive.

When it's a hot summer day in Austin and you've been water-skiing on lake Austin all day,
your options for food are limited.
You've got Hula Hut and Lucy's Boatyard down on the south end of the lake and then you've got Ski Shores up on the north end.
I pick Ski Shores any day for a vast number of reasons.  The first of which is that it's reasonably hard to get to by land and easy to get to by water.  This results in it not having an hour wait for food like the places mentioned above on a hot summer day.  There's also something very satisfying about having a greasy burger and fries after you've been baking in the hot sun all day.  The beer they have is always cold and you can't beat the view.
The people that work there are also totally laid back and very friendly.
I'll definitely be back many more times.

Ski Shores is my idea of heaven. It's a mini-road trip if you're traveling by car, but a mere stop in the channel if you're lucky enough to be on the water. A friend kept insisting that we go, saying he'd found the best kept secret in Austin, so we headed over one evening at dusk to investigate. I feel a bit heartbroken even writing this, knowing it's popularity will soon swell as word travels round. (Not that my reviews are all-reaching, but I was shocked to see a review pre-existed on this place...a surefire sign that people are hearing the good word.)

Anyway, this Lake Austin waterfront food stop looks like a hamburger stand and has been dishing out typical American fare for over 50 YEARS. Incredible. The four of us got veggie burgers and fries, drank cold beers, and sat on a hard picnic table next to the water. They offer live music on the weekend (awesome), but this was a weekday and we enjoyed the quiet sounds of lapping water and boats passing by (no-wake zone). Families of regulars stopped by to grab burgers or a pizza. The owner wandered around shaking hands. And the sun set on the most chill evening I've had in Austin. It's hard to do Ski Shores justice with words...it's something you must experience.

This place off the beaten path served a stellar hamburger right on the dock with shirtless locals, and decent salads, at good prices. It has a great vantage point for the lake; you feel like you're in Dirty Dancing. I felt special because I found this place.

April 2003

In April of this year, a man and his daughter came in to the cafe. Nothing unusual,
I gave them the ole Ski Shores welcome and glad to have you here.
I then went about my business and suddenly I recalled where I had seen this gentleman before.
 On television.
One of the things I enjoy in the morning is a good cup of coffee and watching local weatherman
Gordon Smith's forecast on Fox 7 news.
Ski Shores business is directly related to good weather
and the morning broadcasts help me to determine traffic flow.
The visitor was not Gordon, but a fellow who does "restaurant reviews" and appears on the local broadcast.
Our visitor was none other than the highly respected restaurant reviewer for Central, Texas, Dr. Rob Balon.
Oh my g-d, a feeling of panic struck. Would this man be upset I didn't recognize him?
Were the employees up to the task of representing Ski Shores in the manner we all worked so hard to attain?
The weather, dog gone weather, too bad the weather wasn't nicer. Take a breath.
Whew, alright just relax and let the chips fall where they may.
So, here goes, and without further delay, I invite you to visit Dr. Rob Balon's website not only for our review
but the many others Dr. Balon has prepared:

Dining Out With Rob Balon

New York Times February 1998

...But my friend and I were navigating the greenways in the big white Plymouth, and we headed northwest from the museum to Ski Shores, a 43-year old hole-in-the-wall a few miles farther up on the lake. Sitting on white plastic lawn chairs in front of the dock, we sipped beer and chatted with the proprietor, George Levy, who said that like many gems of Austin, his establishment battles dueling desires to draw new customers and maintain a laid back atmosphere.

The Good Life March 1999

Lakeside Retreat

Less a weekend journey and more an afternoon's jaunt is Ski Shores Waterfront Cafe, one of the best watering holes in the area. The place has been around for eons, and it has that good ole down-by-the-river feel (even though it's on the tame part of the Colorado known as Lake Austin). Families pull up to the dock in boats, park it for awhile. Old-timers drive out for sunshine by the water. Young couples zip in on motorcycles to sip a brew, eat a burger. There's also a nice vintage-car crowd that shows up periodically. But the real appeal is just sitting, languidly, at Ski Shores, wiling away the hours.

Fresh is the Best!

Spicy fries done to perfection and fresh daily meat are the secret of their success. The best burgers I have ever had anywhere.

Boat up or Drive up

This casual restaurant off 620 near City Park is the perfect Saturday afternoon burger spot. The burgers are made to order and inexpensive. The live music is a plus!

Don't Tell

This is the kind of place you discover and then are hesitant to tell everyone about, lest it lose its hidden-gem charm. But here goes. First, the park-like lakeside setting is wonderful. The burgers are very tasty. And if you like informal dining, well, this place couldn't be more casual if it tried. It's a great place to while away a weekend lunch hour.

Burgers, Atmosphere... It's got the works

The Border burger at Ski Shores is by far the best thing going in Austin. Make it out of your way to drive down to the lakeside; you'll love the trip.

Great Stress Relief

When you need to unwind, grab a few of your friends, make the drive down to Ski Shores and do just that. It?s worth every second it takes to get down there.

Lake Austin Original

Ski Shores Waterfront Cafe is a great place to grab a burger and a cold beer. Prices are reasonable and the beer is ice cold. Listen to lice music in the evening, or enjoy the water during the heat of the day. A great place to visit, a great place to eat.

The Best on the Lake

Ski Shores is always a stop we make while on the lake. They have the best burgers ever. Everyone is very friendly and it is so laid back!

Best burger, fries and atmosphere on Lake Austin

Best burgers and fries in the world! Relaxed atmosphere perfect for the lake.

No shoes, No shirt, no problem

Best place to pull up in the boat hop out and order a burger. I have been eating there for the past 10 years and have never been disappointed! Kids can run around, be loud, nobody cares. The prices are as great as the food, which by the way, you get plenty of! A wonderful lakeside tradition.

Great Food + Great Staff = Successful Restaraunt

One thing I liked about this restaurant is the atmosphere it creates for the average worker looking for stress relief. Also, the staff makes me feel young again with their upbeat, laughing attitudes, and laid-back attire. I?d love to go to work feeling as relaxed and comfortable as they look. I think the appearance of these young adults is what keeps all us working adults young, after we dine there after a long day in the real world. Also, another thing that caught my attention was how the owner made his rounds to each table checking out how they were doing. Very nice. IT IS A MUST SEE, MUST EAT!!

Ski Shores Waterfront Cafe

Follow the signs just off of City Park Road (the road is winding and the views spectacular) where you can enjoy one of the area's best hamburgers on a dock on the lake, and catch frequent shows by Austin's best musical acts.

City Search Editorial Profile

Ski Shores is a dockside cafe on Lake Austin that has been serving up burgers, fries, catfish, and cold beer since the '50s. You can get there in a car by heading out City Park Road and following the signs but most people arrive by boat and tie up at one of the several spots along the dock. Live music is featured on the lakeside stage throughout the summer weeks. The performers usually go on in the late afternoon or early evening. I can assure you that you'll find a relaxed, old Austin atmosphere.

All major credit cards accepted!

Ski Shores not only has great food and atmosphere, it also has ample shoreline on Lake Austin. It can get pretty crowded during the summer, but it's worth the trip.

We look forward to a wonderful 2007season!
